Our lives are increasingly global,

as we connect across the planet in countless ways. These connections create systemic changes that have different and unequal impacts in the world. They also happen faster and on a scale larger than our current international institutions and practices can handle. We urgently need more effective and legitimate ways to deal with the big global issues we face, like climate change. But how to govern the globe better?

On Monday March 11th, the Science Café will explore today's complex, polycentric global governance and discuss some promising innovations with two of the leading experts in the field. Jan Aart Scholte (LEI), professor of Global Transformations and Governance Challenges, will introduce us to his holistic view on globalization and its governance and share his insights on the central question of the evening. Rakhyun Kim (UU) will explain the concepts of Earth System Governance. Within this project he analyzes the network of actors and their interactions in the world's fragmented governance system, and studies the potential of ‘global goals’ as a steering mechanism in this web. Throughout the evening, Pessanha will spin his vinyl, immersing The Shamrock into atmospheres of the Global South.
